7 Battle Verses for Overcoming Sin - Part One

Show notes

About This Episode The word of God is sharper than any two-edged sword, and it is what transforms us. In part one of this series, we walk through anchor verses to meditate on when you are trying to overcome sin. We start with the right perspective on sin from 1 John 1-2, then look at 1 Corinthians 10:13, which reminds us that no temptation is uncommon, that God always provides a way of escape, and that temptation itself is not sin. Then Romans 6 breaks the lie that believers are still slaves to sin. As Aaron puts it, this is a conversation for believers who are already saved and being sanctified through the knowledge of the Word. Our desire is that this episode equips you to fight temptation and prepares you to encourage your spouse when they are wrestling with sin.

In This Episode A biblical perspective on sin — The Christian life is neither sinless perfection nor a license to keep sinning (1 John 1-2). Battle verse one — 1 Corinthians 10:13 and the promise that no temptation you face is uncommon. Temptation is not sin — Jesus was tempted yet without sin, so being tempted is not the same as falling. Your way of escape — Heeding the Holy Spirit before you click, walking out the door, or making a phone call. Battle verse two — Romans 6 and the truth that believers are no longer slaves to sin. The elephant and the peg — Why we stay bound by lies we have already been freed from. An open prison — Living like the prison doors have already been blown open. Sanctified by the Word — Growing in holiness and hating sin the way God does, because sin destroys us.
