Tips For How To Say Something Difficult To Your Spouse

Show notes

About This Episode There comes a moment in every marriage, if not many moments, when a couple needs to have a hard conversation. Confronting sin, parenting differences, in-law conflict, big decisions, and areas of growth or change all require more than chatting over dinner. We have had our share of these, so in this episode we share how we have experienced these conversations in our own marriage and what we have learned. We walk through the wrong ways to approach them, from emotionally charged generalities to bad timing and needing to be right, and then the biblical way: praying first, choosing kind timing, making undistracted time, being specific, and always aiming for reconciliation. Our hope is to encourage you when these moments come up in your marriage.

About Aaron & Jennifer Smith Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. Married since 2007 and raising six children in Bend, Oregon, they started Husband Revolution and Unveiled Wife to share what God was teaching them, not from a place of having it figured out, but as fellow travelers pointing couples back to Jesus.

In This Episode When hard talks come — Confronting sin, parenting differences, in-law conflict, big decisions, and areas of growth. Emotionally charged — Why stuffing emotions until the conversation backfires. "You always" and "you never" — Why generalities derail hard conversations. Partner, not enemy — Staying on the same side instead of opposing sides. Needing to be right — Pride, personal agendas, and mixing in other issues. Timing is kind — Why right before a date or a romantic moment is bad timing. Pray first — Asking God whether you're even right, and praying your spouse receives it. Undistracted and specific — Setting aside time, putting phones away, and taking notes. Know your end result — The goal is always reconciliation and unity, not winning.
