How To Confess Your Sin To Your Spouse
Show notes
About This Episode Confessing your sin to your spouse will never be easy, but it is essential for a healthy marriage and for growing in your walk with Christ, and it doesn't happen nearly often enough. In this episode Aaron shares from his own experience confessing pornography to Jennifer: because husband and wife are one flesh, your spouse is the one most affected by your private sin, not just an accountability partner. We talk about why confession brings darkness into the light and helps kill the flesh, how to confess honestly without minimizing, and how to trust God with your spouse's response. We also share how to receive a confession well, with forgiveness, self-control, and reconciliation as the goal.
About Aaron & Jennifer Smith Aaron and Jennifer Smith are the founders of Marriage After God and authors of Husband After God, Wife After God, and Marriage After God. Married since 2007 and raising six children in Bend, Oregon, they started Husband Revolution and Unveiled Wife to share what God was teaching them, not from a place of having it figured out, but as fellow travelers pointing couples back to Jesus.
In This Episode Why confession matters — In a one-flesh marriage, your spouse is the one offended by your private sin. Darkness into light — How confession exposes sin and helps put the flesh to death. Remember the cross — Nothing your spouse has done is worse than what we have done against God. Honesty without minimizing — Why half-truths and downplaying undermine a confession. Repentance and confession — Why they are two different things, and both matter. Timing — Choosing a good time without waiting for the perfect one. Receiving a confession — Creating a safe place, feeling the hurt with self-control, and forgiving. Reconciliation is the goal — Don't rush your spouse to forgive; trust God with their heart.
